Door dropping, catching on the frame or hard to lock? REMS Locksmith Leeds realigns and adjusts doors for homes and businesses across Leeds, so they close smoothly and lock properly. I look at the hinges, the frame and the lock together, explain what is causing the problem, and give you an upfront price. With over 20+ years of experience, I know when a small adjustment is all it takes. Call 07786 373033 to arrange a visit.

How Do You Know If Your Door Needs Adjusting?

  • The door catches on the frame or rubs the floor or threshold
  • You have to lift the handle, or push or pull the door, to lock it
  • The gaps around the door look uneven
  • You can see daylight or feel a draught around the edges
  • You have to slam the door to make it latch
  • The lock or handle has started to feel stiff

A door that is out of line can stop the bolts and hooks going fully into the keeps. That means it may look locked when it is not properly secure.

Why Do Doors Drop Out of Alignment?

  • Worn or loose hinges: The most common cause. Screws loosen and hinges wear with daily use.
  • Heavy doors: Double glazed uPVC and composite doors are heavy and slowly pull on their hinges.
  • Seasonal changes: Timber swells in damp weather and shrinks when it is dry, and frames move with temperature.
  • Building movement: Settling can shift a frame out of square.
  • Forced entry damage: A break-in attempt can twist a door or frame.

What I Adjust and Repair

  • Hinge adjustment: uPVC and composite hinges can usually be adjusted for height, side to side and pressure.
  • Hinge replacement: Worn or broken hinges replaced with proper fixings.
  • Keep and strike plate adjustment: Repositioned or replaced so bolts and hooks engage correctly.
  • Dropped door correction: Packing and refitting to lift a sagging door back into position.
  • Timber doors: Hinge refitting and easing of tight edges.
  • Lock checks: I test the lock afterwards and repair it if needed.

Alignment First, Then the Lock

A misaligned door wears out its lock, so I always check both. If the lock or gearbox is already damaged, I can repair it at the same visit. See my door lock and mechanism repairs. If the door or frame is too damaged to adjust, I say so and explain your options.

Door Alignment for Landlords and Businesses

For landlords and letting agents, a door that won’t close or lock properly is a security problem, and it is worth sorting before new tenants move in. Shops and offices also can’t afford a door that fails to lock at closing time. I work directly with landlords, letting agents and businesses, and can plan visits around access and opening hours where possible. Find out more on my commercial locksmith page.

Door Out of Line After a Break-In?

Forced entry often leaves a door twisted or a frame out of line, even after the obvious damage is repaired. My burglary damage repairs service covers immediate repairs, and I can correct the alignment at the same visit.

Common Questions About Door Alignment & Adjustments

Find answers to commonly asked questions about my locksmith services.

In most cases, yes. uPVC doors can usually be adjusted at the hinges, and worn hinges or packers can be replaced. If the door or frame is too damaged, I tell you.

Usually the door has dropped slightly, so the hooks or bolts no longer line up with the keeps. Adjusting the door normally fixes it. Forcing the handle can damage the gearbox.

It can help, because a door that closes evenly seals better. Worn seals are a separate issue, and we let you know if that is the cause.

If the lock only feels stiff when the door is closed, or you have to lift or push the door to lock it, the door is probably out of line. I check both.

Yes. Tenants should get the landlord's permission first. I also work with landlords and letting agents.
