Why Won't My uPVC Window Close or Lock Properly?

When a uPVC window stops working, the cause is usually one of these:

  • A worn or broken handle. Handles take a lot of daily use. The internal spindle or gearing can wear out, leaving the handle loose, floppy or spinning without locking the window.
  • A failed locking mechanism. Inside the sash is a metal locking strip, often called an espagnolette. If it snaps or seizes, the handle may turn but the locking points won’t move.
  • Worn friction hinges. These hinges hold the sash in place as it opens. When they wear or bend, the window drops, catches on the frame or won’t stay open.
  • Misaligned keeps. The keeps on the frame receive the locking points. If they’ve moved or worn, the window won’t lock without forcing the handle.
  • A dropped sash. Over time, the weight of the glass can make the sash sag, so it no longer lines up with the frame.
  • Damage from a break-in. Forced windows often have bent hinges, snapped mechanisms and damaged handles.

If you’re not sure which applies to your window, don’t worry. I’ll diagnose the fault on my first visit and explain it in plain English.

Repair or Replace? Why Most uPVC Windows Can Be Fixed

It’s a common assumption that a faulty uPVC window means a new window. In reality, the frame and glass usually outlast the moving parts by many years. Handles, hinges and locking mechanisms are designed to be replaceable, so fitting new ones gives you a window that works like new without the cost and disruption of replacement.

I’ll only suggest a new window if the frame itself is badly damaged or warped, and even then I’ll be upfront about it. If the problem is with the glass, such as a misted double glazed unit, I’ll tell you so you can contact a glazier rather than paying me for work I don’t need to do.

Keeping Your Windows Secure

Windows are a common entry point for burglars, particularly at the back of a property where they’re out of sight. Upgrading to lockable handles on ground floor and easy to reach windows is a simple step, and many home insurers expect key operated locks on accessible windows. It’s worth checking your policy wording to be sure.

Windows in new homes built in England since October 2015 must meet Approved Document Q of the Building Regulations, and many are tested to the PAS 24 security standard.. Older windows often have more basic hardware. I can upgrade handles, locking mechanisms and keeps on older frames to improve security without replacing the whole window. If a window has been forced during a break-in, my burglary damage repairs service will make your property secure the same day.

Usually either the locking mechanism inside the sash has snapped or the handle's spindle has worn out. I can quickly tell which it is, and both are normally fixed on the same visit.

Most handle or locking mechanism repairs take under an hour per window. Hinge replacements take a little longer, and I'll give you a time estimate along with your upfront price.
