Yes, a good quality smart lock that’s properly fitted can be just as secure as a traditional high security lock. The risk comes from cheap, unrated locks sold online and from poor installation. Some budget smart locks use weak cylinders that can be snapped in seconds, and a lock that’s fitted badly can fail to engage fully, even if the app says it’s locked.
That’s why we only recommend smart locks from established brands with recognised security ratings, and why I fit them myself. A smart lock should make your home more convenient without making it any easier to break into.
Not every smart lock suits every door or every household. Before you buy, it’s worth checking these points:
If that sounds like a lot to weigh up, don’t worry. I’ll look at your door, ask how you plan to use the lock and recommend models that genuinely fit.
Call me for urgent locksmith assistance. I respond quickly to emergencies across Leeds.
Smart locks are especially useful when lots of people need access. Landlords and letting agents can give contractors temporary codes rather than handing out keys. Holiday let and short stay owners can send guests a code that works only during their booking, which saves meeting people at the door and removes the risk of lost keys.
For offices, shops and small businesses, keypad and app controlled locks let you add and remove staff access instantly, and many keep a record of who unlocked the door and when. Remember that fire exits must still open easily from the inside without a key or code. I’ll make sure your setup keeps escape routes safe. Find out more on my commercial locksmith page.
Some insurers have specific lock requirements, and not every smart lock meets them. Before you switch, check your policy wording or ask your insurer directly. Choosing a smart lock with a TS007 3 star or SS312 Diamond rated cylinder is the safest option. For wider protection, my security upgrades service covers doors, windows and letterboxes too.
With 20+ years of experience fitting and repairing locks across Leeds, I understand both the mechanical and digital side of modern door security. I recommend locks based on your door and needs, not on what’s easiest to sell, and I give you an upfront price before any work begins.
Once your lock is fitted, I’m still here if you need us. My emergency locksmith services are available round the clock for lockouts and faults, for both residential and commercial customers.

Most smart locks warn you well before the battery runs low. Many also have a physical key override or emergency power port, so you can still get in.
Most quality smart locks include a keyed backup. I recommend choosing one that does, so you always have a way in if the electronics fail.
